Baby has colic? Maybe they’re overtired.
Have you been told by a doctor or loved one that your baby has colic?
Finding a label for all that crying can initially bring some mental relief, right?
Finally. A diagnosis.
All that relief quickly disappears when you realise there is almost nothing you can do to resolve it except… wait it out.
You have a label, but now the prospect of enduring unresolvable crying. For months.
Unhelpful to say the least.
Colic is notoriously over diagnosed. It’s generally used when doctors or well meaning loved ones have no idea why your baby is so unsettled.
It’s an unhelpful label that ignores the cause of why your child is so unsettled.
The symptoms of colic and overtiredness are very similar.
Prolonged, intense crying which seems as though they are in pain
Extreme fussiness
Body tension such as pulled up legs, clenched fists, arched back
Digestive discomfort such as burping, wind, spitting up milk
It’s no wonder it’s over diagnosed.
Overtired babies will cry more.
Overtired babies will seem hungry, usually resulting in them being over fed.
Over fed babies will be more gassy and uncomfortable.
Gassy and uncomfortable babies will find it hard to relax and sleep.
And so the cycle repeats.
When we work with families that have been told their baby has colic, we move away from the colic label, improve the sleep and at the very least, symptoms dramatically decrease. Usually disappearing completely.
Sure, colic does exist. It’s just grossly misunderstood and over diagnosed.
